The tire pressure is high. Can you really save fuel?

2023-02-06

Theoretically, the higher the tire pressure, the smaller the contact area between the tire and the ground, the smaller the rolling resistance, and the less work the engine does to overcome the rolling resistance. Naturally, fuel can be saved to a certain extent, but the increase of tire pressure should be moderate, not exceeding the normal range specified by the manufacturer.

Otherwise, the disadvantages of high tire pressure will greatly outweigh the benefits of fuel saving, such as poor vibration filtration performance (small vibration feeling is very uneven), greater impact on the wheels and chassis when walking on the bad road, longer parking time, uneven tread wear (faster in the middle), and increased risk of tire explosion.

As the only part of the car that touches the ground, tyres have all these shortcomings, which seriously threaten the driving safety. To blindly save fuel and inflate tyres excessively is a waste of watermelon and sesame seeds. The traditional concept in the past is that high tyre pressure is easy to burst (I don't know who spread the theory). In fact, the lower the tyre pressure is, the easier it is to burst at high speed.

The lower the tire pressure is, the larger the contact area between the tire and the ground is, and the tire is over-inflated, which is equivalent to lateral elongation. During this process, bending movement will occur, resulting in excessive heat generation, which is not easy to dissipate quickly. Due to low tire pressure and insufficient internal support of the tire, the internal structure of the tire, such as the curtain layer, is easy to be damaged.

For example, if the tire pressure is too low, when climbing on the curb, the probability of tire blowout is the highest, because when the tire climbs on the curb, the structure will be distorted, which will inevitably damage the curtain, and the bulge is inevitable! When the car is running, the tire will repeatedly compress and recover. When the tire is compressed, it will produce some resistance to the vehicle.

For example, in the figure above, when the tire rolls from point A to point B, it begins to compress gradually. In this process, part of the kinetic energy is converted into the internal energy of the tire. The higher the tire pressure, the smaller the compression force of the tire when it rolls to point B, and the less the energy loss.

Therefore, properly inflated tyres can actually save fuel. Do not let the tyres have a little air because of the change of season. These methods are unreliable. Whether it is winter or summer, it is the most reliable to always maintain the standard tyre pressure. At the same time, the risk of excessive air leakage of tyres under high temperature will also increase correspondingly.

The manufacturer has been tested, and will mark a reasonable tire pressure number for us after passing the test. You must not forget to check the standard tire pressure of your car. In the future, your tires will be inflated according to the specified value, and everything will be fine. More importantly, check the tire pressure anytime and anywhere to ensure that the tire pressure is normal, save gasoline, and extend the tire life.

To ensure driving safety, too high tire pressure will also bring a high risk of tire blowout. In addition to the fact that the tire is blocked by solid objects on the ground, the local high tire pressure will cause a tire blowout, and the air will expand faster than the rubber tire. In high temperature weather, the tire with too high tire pressure will easily explode at high speed.

Of course, if the tire pressure is too high, the comfort of the passengers in the car will also be reduced. The most intuitive feeling is that the car feels cool when driving, and your driving safety brings great hidden dangers. However, the tire pressure is too large and bad, and the tire pressure is too small and bad, and there are many factors that affect fuel consumption.

Therefore, do not over-inflate the tires. Over-inflation will increase tire wear and tire wear. The relatively small contact area will directly cause safety hazards. Therefore, it is the safest and most economical to inflate the tires to the specified tire pressure of the vehicle during normal driving. I hope you do not believe that deliberately raising the tire pressure when saving fuel will not pay off.
